THE WAR OF CONKERS CHAMP 2009

Shaun - The War of Conkers Camp 2009

Shaun with The Golden Conker
- he took his conker from the first round through to the final to win in magnificent style.

The Tournament

In days of old men, disputes were settled not through slapsies, thumb war or crying like a baby; men reached for a horse chestnut.  On Saturday 31st October we reenacted those great days at the Showdown. Read what happened below.

The Report

The tournament was fought according to the World Conker Championship rules; each battle lasted 5 minutes followed by the best of 9 strikes.  Competition for the coveted Golden Conker was fierce.

Knightly looked strong in the first round unleashing a powerful barrage of strikes.  However, after lasting the full 5 minutes, Knightly blasted his own Conker to pieces, proving that conker choice is a critical as skill.

Late entrant, Shaun, took the art of conker selection to a new level.   Choosing a large conker with a sloping side, Shaun opted for the high risk strategy of using the same conker to win the second round.

If winning was simply down to raw power, Richard would have taken the crown.  Combining accuracy with conker-splitting top strikes, Richard powered through the first two rounds to meet Shaun in the final. The Golden Conker

The final was tense. In front of the Showdown crowd,  Shaun turned down a new conker and began blows with his original nut.  He sacrificed power for precision with his first three strikes. Then the strings were swapped, and Richard stepped up.  Like lightening from above Richard rained down blows - and then it was over! Richard’s nut imploded against Shaun’s mighty conker.

The title and Golden Conker went to Shaun - a noble winner.  But surely the evening went to his magnificent nut.  In years to come, the legend of the conker with the sloping side will still be told around the firesides of Streatham.
